"You see, there was this boy, and he ruled the world.Everything belonged to him now. As far as his eyes could see, he was the only one left alive. You might think he was pretty upset about the whole situation and he was, for awhile. There were dead bodies and nothing but desolation and it's true that he sat around a lot and wished that he was dead, too. For a long time he wondered why he remained and all the others were taken. Then he thought, it doesn't matter. It just is. Anyway, sitting around just got boring. So he equipped himself with tools and weapons and set out with his faithful sidekick so see what there was left to see and do what there was left to do. He wasn't disappointed, because since the fall of Humanity, the world had changed in a thousand different ways too small to notice at first and some so fantastic he couldn't believe it. As the days passed into weeks, he discovered something amazing there really are monsters in the dark." What if a pandemic plague struck the planet and when you woke up one morning, everyone else was dead? What if you were a fourteen year old boy with an excellent imagination and the will to survive? What if you found that something else was out there, hunting you? This is the story of Brady, a teenager who quickly discovers that although people may be scarce in the world of the Abandonment, other things are arising to take their place. He is master of all he surveys but discovers that the world has changed and that he has gained some new exciting abilities. With no adults to tell him what to do and no peers to judge him, Brady discovers that he is capable of great deeds and this is a good thing, because things long quiet are waking up from the sleep of ages. With his faithful dog, Max, and a host of non-human assistants, Brady discovers that there are monsters in the dark and that deep within his own heart, a hero dwells. This post-apocalyptic novel straddles the line between fantasy and magic surrealism and is intended for teenage audiences and beyond. Half survival tale and half magical odyssey, this is a hero's journey into the darkness of the monster's lair and back out again. Action, horror, and mystery blend together with a sense of wonder and loss at a world gone forever. If the world ended tomorrow and you were still alive, then what? In this novel, the main character decides to survive and finds that, aside from food, water and a safe place to sleep, his most necessary tool for survival is imagination and a good, sharp sword! This novel is lavishly illustrated with 50 beautifully crafted drawings by Brian Estes. The story is set in the present-day cities of Bangor and Brewer in central Maine after the advent of an airborne virus has destroyed all but a few humans on earth. Unless these people can find each other, the species is doomed to extinction. This reconnection of the few straggling survivors becomes one of the central themes of the story. Perfect for readers looking for adventure, ghosts, werewolves, and things coming to life that were never meant to do so. A ripping good tale!

This story was magical, fantastical, a modern fairytale version of the 'end of the world', and I loved it. I have even given it my coveted 5 stars because it drew me into it's vision so completely. First of all, be aware that although this IS a story about the EOTWAWKI, it is not a gritty realistic take on survival. It contains no zombies and no wandering gangs of malcontents or armies. There are no irradiated mutants, nor talking chimps who have taken over and consigned humanity to slavery. If that's what you're looking for then there are plenty of other books out there that will satisfy your appetite. This is a magical journey of imagination not unlike Alice's adventures in Wonderland or Dorothy's wandering in the fabled land of Oz; although the story takes place on OUR Earth, after a terrible virus has pretty much decimated the entire planet. Full of nods to Greek mythology (and in some cases more than nods), and the strength and breadth of a child's imagination, THIS tale is almost a fable. I would consider it would be a wonderful 'out loud' read for younger children, but adults who enjoy, and have not forgotten, what it is like to live inside one's imagination should also find it an engaging ride. I know I did. It was a complete joy to read, for me (and remember all we can post here is our OPINION of books), and if the next book is as good as this I would certainly buy it. Even if the author has only one book in him, this one, I wouldn't complain, because this took me back to my 'reading roots' and made me recall why I love reading fantasy so very much.

Compelling idea for plot and enjoyed reading it. The monsters were scary. Think kids will like the struggle of two teens against the evil. Haven't finished it, but did read the last pages (I always do) and thought the ending was a bit of a cop-out. Will finish it to see if that is true.
I am a voracious reader, very familiar with this type of "end of the world" genre. This had to be one of the most entertaining books of this type I've ever read! It ruined my week at work and left me sleepless at night. I was almost impossible to put it down, and held me to the last page. Can't wait for the promised sequel! Come on, this was published in 2011! Mr Burby don't make us wait much longer for our next visit with our protagonist, Brady! I loved his suite of companions....haven't seen a more likeable, interesting cast since the Wizard of Oz!
IF YOU WANT YOUR IMAGINATION TO TAKE YOU AWAY ON A MAGICAL, MYSTERIOUS, SAD, HAPPY, ENERGETIC AND HOPEFUL JOURNEY, BY ALL MEANS READ AND ENJOY THIS BOOK AS MUCH AS I DID.iT KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT AND PUSHES YOU TO ANTICIPATE THE NEXT PAGE! IF YOU HAVE NO IMAGINATION, PASS IT BY OR PERHAPS, JUST PERHAPS IT MIGHT GIVE YOU AN IMAGINATION. THIS IS A WONDERFUL STORY ABOUT A SMALL BOY WHO WORKS WONDERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD. I LOVED IT - DID I ALREADY SAY THAT??
A great read. Post-apocalyptic sci-fi, a major genre in our uncertain age, has a new contender in The Last Boy on Earth. This novel is, in a way, a history of the genre, beginning with hints of Nevil Shute's On the Beach, but it quickly morphs into an exploration of the human mind under severe stress, including Greek, Norse and Roman mythology, pop culture, Beowulf and The Wizard of Oz. Love his idea of quantum fiction imagination is the rule of the universe, source of physics and meaning. Could have used some careful proofreading, but the hiccoughs are minor in the grand scheme of the narrative.
This book is like a combination of The Neverending Story and The Silmarillion with a little Greek mythology and good historical fiction thrown in. What a pleasant surprise! I bought it as a quick read to pass the time on a trip up to Maine (didnt even know it took place there) and was pleased to be drawn in to a strange and exciting story. The main character is a good kid, just the kind of kid anyone would hope to raise. The supporting characters are so unexpected! I havent read many end of the world stories but this one seems very different from the rest, no zombies- just the real, all-encompassing emotions that would arise in such a terrible situation-and a lot of imagination. Decent enough to be read by my twelve year old son, but interesting enough to more than hold my attention. I grew up in Maine so I loved the mention of Fort Knox (no, not the one in Kentucky), one of my old haunts. Would have loved to talk to a bear or moose, maybe I just wasnt listening??
A story about a child, that I would not recommend for a child. The writer is frighteningly accurate in his depiction of what happens when a child is isolated. I have to admit that the writing is great, but I found the story so disturbing that not only did I not finish it, I would be skittish about anything else this writer wrote. Kudos to the writer, but call me chicken, I don't care. I will not finish this book, I read for enjoyment, and this is too dark and depressing.
Mr Burby's power of imagination comes through in this easy to read novel in which the end of the world is not such a downer! Surprising characters make you start to think about the nature of reality, and the hope and courage that are shown leaves you feeling good. I especially like the way Brady, the main character, manages to break old human habits and treats animals and non- humans with respect. There is a little repetition, which is the only reason I left off a star. I can't wait to see what happens in the next adventure!
